The artwork of pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, entitled "Sleeping Girl", was sold for $ 44.3 million dollars in an auction of post-war and contemporary art held by Sotheby's.
Sales reached a record price for the French auction house in this artistic category. The value of the painting style surpassed the high estimate of $ 40 million dollars. The previous record was $ 43.2 million. Alongside the "Figure Writing Reflected in Mirror" of 1976 by Francis Bacon, the work reached the highest price of the event. The piece by Francis Bacon was taken by approximately $ 44.8 million, including commissions.
Forty-six of the 57 lots on offer were sold. Three of them were sold for over $ 35 million each, including the artwork "Double Elvis" by Andy Warhol, which reached U.S. $ 37 million.
Last week, Sotheby's sold the piece "The Scream" by Edvard Munch for the highest price in history of art at auction sales: approximately $ 120 million.
